The Depression and World
War II: 1920’s-1950
Economic and social constraints of
the period limited the professional interaction between Salem
and geographers at the national level, but the mission of preparing
teachers continued.
1920 - 1950
- Most of the geography at Salem Normal School was taught by Verna
Flanders and Amy Ware. Verna Flanders
(1915-1953) received her M.S. in Geography from the University
of Chicago and, with 38 years of service, she had the second longest
continuous length of tenure (after Paul V. Salley and tied with
John L. George) of all geography faculty. Amy Ware (1923-51) earned
her M.A. in Geography from Columbia University. Both women taught
a variety of regional and traditional systematic courses that
served the education programs at the institution.
1932
- The “Normal School” changed its designation to “Teachers
College”.
